What is APS for Germany?
APS India, the Academic Evaluation Center of the German Embassy's Science Section in New Delhi, verifies academic documents and educational qualifications issued by Indian institutions for applicants who intend to study in Germany.
For many Indian students, the APS certificate is an important part of the Germany admission and visa journey. APS checks the authenticity and formal plausibility of the applicant's academic records. Students should always use the current APS checklist that matches their academic profile.
What is dMAT?
The Digital Master Test, or dMAT, is a standardized academic aptitude test administered by g.a.s.t. From 2026, it is being introduced as an additional element in the APS documentation process for selected Indian graduates applying for Master's-level study in Germany.
dMAT does not replace APS verification. It also does not automatically replace GRE, GATE, university-specific admission tests, degree recognition through anabin, or the university's own admission requirements.
Who needs dMAT for Germany in 2027?
Under the current introductory rules, dMAT applies to Master's applicants whose previous degree falls within these broad areas:
- Engineering
- Commerce
- Accounting
- Finance
- Economics
- Business / Management
The requirement is connected to applications for Summer Semester 2027 and later Master's intakes, unless the applicant qualifies for a transition exemption.
Who is exempt under the transition rules?
According to the current APS India guidance, students may be exempt from the new dMAT requirement for their existing APS procedure if they completed APS online registration before 29 June 2026 or shipped their complete APS application documents before 29 June 2026.
Students who have already completed the APS procedure and received their APS certificate are not required to take dMAT retrospectively for that completed APS procedure.
Can you apply for APS before getting the dMAT result?
Yes. APS India currently allows affected applicants to submit their complete APS documents before the dMAT certificate becomes available. This can help APS begin document verification earlier.
However, where dMAT is required, APS can issue the final APS certificate only after the dMAT certificate has been submitted and the result has been checked against the information provided by g.a.s.t.

How is the dMAT structured?
For the APS procedure in India, the dMAT consists of two compulsory parts:
- Core Module: measures general cognitive and analytical abilities through three subtests.
- General Academic Module: measures the ability to apply those skills to academic problem-solving.
The full examination is approximately three and a half hours including a break between modules. The current format uses single-choice questions. The General Academic Module contains roughly 60 questions, although the actual number may vary.
The emphasis is on reasoning, transfer and application rather than simply memorising facts.
How is dMAT scored?
The dMAT certificate reports a percentile rank and a dMAT score. The dMAT score is presented on a 0–200 scale with a mean of 100. Separate scores are shown for the Core Module and subject module, and the overall result is based on the two module scores.
A low dMAT score does not automatically mean the APS certificate will be refused. APS continues to verify academic documents and qualifications as part of its normal procedure.
Does dMAT replace GRE or GATE?
No. dMAT is an additional APS-related requirement for the affected applicant groups. A German university may still have its own admissions criteria, including GRE, GATE, GPA, subject prerequisites, language requirements or other tests. Students must check the individual Master's program requirements separately.
Where can Indian students take dMAT?
For the first published administration, dMAT test centres in India include Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune. Berlin and Kathmandu are also listed outside India.
Hyderabad is not on the first published India test-centre list. Students from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh should check the live g.a.s.t. booking portal for the currently available centres before making travel plans.

- Identify whether your Bachelor's degree falls within an affected dMAT field.
- Check whether you qualify for the APS transition exemption.
- Check your university and degree recognition status in anabin.
- Use the correct APS checklist for your academic profile.
- If dMAT applies, monitor the official dMAT site for the next registration window.
- Prepare using the official sample tasks and demonstration material.
- Start university shortlisting early rather than waiting for APS to be completed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is dMAT compulsory for all Indian students applying to Germany?
No. Under the current rollout, it applies to selected Master's applicants from specified academic backgrounds and for Summer Semester 2027 or later, subject to transition exemptions.
I already have my APS certificate. Do I need dMAT now?
Not retrospectively for the APS procedure that has already been completed. If you submit a new APS application later, the rules in force at that time may apply.
Can I send my APS documents before taking dMAT?
Yes. APS can begin checking the rest of your documents, but where dMAT is required the APS certificate cannot be issued until the dMAT certificate has been submitted and checked.
Does a low dMAT score mean APS rejection?
No. APS India states that a low score does not automatically result in refusal of the APS certificate.
Is dMAT the same as TestAS?
No. They are different tests. APS India currently states that TestAS is not a mandatory component of the APS verification procedure, while dMAT is required for selected Master's applicants in the affected fields.
When is the next dMAT after September 2026?
The official dMAT FAQ says the next test is planned for the first quarter of 2027. The exact date is expected to be published on the official dMAT website.
