Why this matters for Indian students planning New Zealand in 2027
Post-study work opportunities are an important part of course selection for many Indian students. New Zealand's latest changes create an additional graduate pathway for some students who would otherwise not qualify for the standard Post-Study Work Visa.
The changes do not mean every course automatically leads to a work visa. Eligibility depends on qualification level, study duration, previous qualifications and the visa requirements in force when you apply.
What is the new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa?
From 16 November 2026, eligible international graduates can apply for a Short-Term Graduate Work Visa. It allows the holder to stay and work in New Zealand for up to six months with open work rights, providing time to look for employment and potentially move to another eligible work visa.
| Requirement | New Short-Term Graduate Work Visa |
|---|---|
| Opening date | 16 November 2026 |
| Duration | Up to 6 months |
| Qualification | Eligible NZQCF Level 5, 6 or 7 qualification |
| Study | Full-time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks |
| Funds | At least NZD $5,000 |
| Timing | Must have held a valid student visa within the 3 months before applying |
| Previous graduate visa | Must not previously have held a Short-Term Graduate Work Visa or Post-Study Work Visa |
Which qualifications qualify?
The new visa is aimed at graduates of eligible NZQCF Level 5 to 7 qualifications who studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks but do not qualify for the standard Post-Study Work Visa. English-language, foundation and bridging qualifications do not qualify under the announced rules.
Students should verify the exact NZQCF level and immigration eligibility before paying tuition. A course being marketed as career-focused does not itself guarantee post-study work eligibility.
Post-Study Work Visa eligibility is expanding
From 16 November 2026, New Zealand will extend Post-Study Work Visa eligibility to graduates who complete a Level 7 Graduate Diploma in New Zealand and already hold a bachelor's degree from New Zealand or overseas.
The Graduate Diploma must have been studied full-time in New Zealand for its full duration, with full-duration enrolment. Cross-crediting or recognition of prior learning does not count toward this eligibility route.
What about Master's students?
Eligible Master's graduates can receive a Post-Study Work Visa of up to three years. Immigration New Zealand states that a Master's applicant must complete at least 30 weeks of full-time study while enrolled in the Master's programme itself.
This matters where a student completes a Postgraduate Diploma and transfers credits into a Master's. Transferred credits do not count toward the Master's study requirement for Post-Study Work Visa purposes.
What about a Postgraduate Diploma?
An eligible Level 8 Postgraduate Diploma may support a one-year Post-Study Work Visa where the relevant requirements are met. Students moving from a Postgraduate Diploma into a Master's should plan their study structure carefully rather than assuming transferred credits automatically produce a three-year graduate visa.
Can you get the graduate visa more than once?
No. Immigration New Zealand states that a person can only receive one Post-Study Work Visa. Someone who has previously held a Post-Study Work Visa is not eligible for another Post-Study Work Visa or the new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa. The Short-Term Graduate Work Visa itself can also only be granted once.
Student work rights: up to 25 hours a week
Eligible New Zealand student visa holders can work part-time for up to 25 hours per week during study. The increase from 20 to 25 hours took effect on 3 November 2025. Depending on visa conditions and programme, full-time work may also be permitted during scheduled holidays.
Students should always check the conditions on their own eVisa rather than assuming every student has identical work rights.
Which route may apply to you?
| Study profile | Potential graduate work option |
|---|---|
| Eligible Master's degree | Post-Study Work Visa, potentially up to 3 years subject to requirements |
| Eligible Level 8 Postgraduate Diploma | Potential 1-year Post-Study Work Visa |
| Level 7 Graduate Diploma + bachelor's degree | Expanded Post-Study Work Visa eligibility from 16 November 2026, subject to requirements |
| Eligible Level 5–7 qualification not qualifying for PSWV | Potential 6-month Short-Term Graduate Work Visa |
What should Indian students check before applying for 2027?
- NZQCF level: confirm the exact qualification level.
- Post-study eligibility: verify whether the programme leads to a PSWV, Short-Term Graduate Work Visa, or neither.
- Study duration: 24-week and 30-week requirements matter for different routes.
- Previous qualification: a bachelor's degree matters for the new Level 7 Graduate Diploma pathway.
- Total budget: consider tuition, living costs, visa fees, insurance and accommodation.
- Employability: a graduate work visa provides work rights; it does not guarantee employment or residence.
