Placing its students at the center of its planning, the University provides a holistic educational environment. Hampton University (HU) is a private historically black university in HamptonVirginia. It was founded in 1868 by black and whiteleaders of the American Missionary Association after the American Civil War to provide education to freedmen. It is home to the Hampton University Museum, which is the oldest museum of the African diaspora in the United States, and the oldest museum in the state of Virginia.[2] In 1878, it established a program for teaching Native Americans that lasted until 1923
