The University of Kaiserslautern (short HSKL or HS KL, formerly University of Kaiserslautern ) with the three study sites Kaiserslautern, Pirmasens and Zweibrücken is a German University of Applied Sciences. It has approximately 6,202 students (including 1,942 female), 482.5 (thereof 180 female and 148 professors) one of the great universities in Rhineland-Palatinate and is a more than a 160-year tradition in engineering education.
The earliest forerunner of today's university is the Chair of Practical Mechanics, founded in 1844, at the District College of Crafts. After the other stations of the Higher Technical State Education (1922) and the State Engineering School Kaiserslautern (founded in 1942, 1943 closed), she was in 1959 as Staatl. Founded engineering school for mechanical engineering. This was merged in 1969 with the Palatine Engineering School for Construction to the State Engineering School for Construction and Mechanical Engineering. In the year 1971, these then to the newly founded University of Applied Sciences Rheinland-Pal brought in. The following year, the Department of Textile Technology was expanded by the acquisition of the former State School of Engineering for Textile Technology Lambrecht and incorporated the Werkkunstschule of the District Association of Palatinate as a department of interior design and graphics/design.
In 1989, the departments of textile technology, shoe and leather technology and chemical engineering were relocated from Kaiserslautern to Pirmasens. were fed as a conversion project in which former military sites to civilian use, was created in 1994 the study Two bridges with the departments of business administration, computer science and microsystems technology.

In September 2014, it was renamed Kaiserslautern University. However, Kaiserslautern University still has the status of a university.
