The Koblenz University (formerly University of Applied Sciences in Koblenz) is a public college in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It was founded in 1996, but the roots of today's field of materials glass and ceramics in Höhr-Grenzhausen date back to the 19th century.
The Koblenz University of Applied Sciences offers 70 study programs in its 6 subject areas (engineering, economics, construction-art materials, social sciences, economics and social sciences, mathematics and technology), including 45 undergraduate, 23 master and one MBA distance study program with 8 specializations as well as 2 certificate courses. A total of 8 distance learning courses and 16 dual / practice-integrated degree programs are offered.
With the exception of the study program "Materials Technology Glass and Ceramics", whose roots date back to the 19th century, the beginnings of the Koblenz University of Applied Sciences date back to the end of the Second World War. Many homes and industrial plants were destroyed at that time, the need for household goods of all kinds very large. Reconstruction was lacking in skilled technicians and engineers.
In order to remedy the shortage of civil engineers and architects, the city of Koblenz founded a building school in the fall of 1948. Two makeshift rooms in the former Antonius Kolleg of the Capuchin monastery in Ehrenbreitstein served as the first training centre. With effect from September 15, 1949, the "technical courses Andernach" and the building school were merged and the so-called "United Technical Institutes Koblenz" began teaching in the winter semester 1949/50. Eleven full-time and six part-time teachers taught around 300 students in the three departments Building Construction, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. For winter semester 1951/52 the field of electrical engineering was added.
