The Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences was founded on August 1, 1971, through the merger of eight "higher vocational schools", three engineering schools and an art school in the area Krefeld-Mönchengladbach. The State Engineering School for Textile Industry in Krefeld, which had the longest tradition of its predecessors, also went there.
Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences, which was called Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences until 2001, is headquartered in Krefeld with its Presidium and Administration; the departments are spread over the two campuses in Krefeld and one in Mönchengladbach. For the winter semester 2016/17, 8,273 people and 6,377 in Krefeld (at the Frankenring and Reinarzstraße locations) are studying in Mönchengladbach. With around 14,650 students, the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences is the fourth largest university of applied sciences in Germany and, after the TH Cologne, the second largest in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences has a tutoring program, which was officially accredited in June 2016, which has been in existence since 2010. In the field of teaching, she was also successful in three major funding programs of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
