International Psychoanalytic University

At the IPU, the subject Psychology is offered with training content that integrates a humanities orientation of psychoanalytic psychology with the scientific orientation of academic psychology. Currently (as of summer semester 2018) a Bachelor of Science degree program in Psychology and five Master of Arts programs are offered. Like every German university, the IPU can independently decide which academic degree it awards.

A Master of Arts program in Psychology is a unique feature within the German higher education landscape, otherwise, the Bachelor or Master of Science degrees are awarded in the subject Psychology. As a result, the intellectual-scientific positioning of psychoanalytic psychology is emphasized by the IPU. The situation is different in the US, where psychology programs are often offered through Bachelor of Arts or Master of Arts programs. The IPU presented in the winter semester 2017/2018 for the Bachelor of Arts Psychology in the Bachelor of Science Psychology, as it the recommendations of the German Society of Psychology which has recently recommended the Bachelor of Science in Psychology as an entry requirement for a consecutive Master's program.

The Master of Arts Psychology immediately took first place in front of the University of Mannheim as the best state university in its first participation in the CHE Master Ranking (2016). The IPU Berlin is located in 12 of the 13 categories studied in the leading group. This makes it the best university for a master's program in psychology.
