The Ivan Franko National University of Lviv is a classical higher educational establishment with powerful scientific schools, long traditions and modern innovative approaches. His main goal is to provide high educational and scientific standards, cultural, social needs of the individual, society and the state in the process of training highly skilled specialists. The University's activities are based on the preservation of Ukrainian culture and traditions, the development of national consciousness and identity.
The history of the creation of Lviv University dates back to the seventeenth century.
In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. the centres of cultural life in the Ukrainian lands were church fraternities.
Using the support of the burghers and the clergy, they promoted the spread of ideas of humanism, the development of science and schooling. The oldest in Ukraine was the Uspensky Stavropigian Brotherhood in Lviv, which became a prominent Ukrainian cultural centre. Since 1586 in Lviv there was a fraternal school, which was a secondary educational institution.
Here they studied the Church Slavonic, Greek, Latin and Polish languages, mathematics, grammar, rhetoric, astronomy, philosophy and other disciplines. Members of the Lviv Brotherhood planned to even turn their "gymnasium" (so they called this school) into a higher educational institution.

By the middle of the XVII century. There were no higher educational institutions in Ukraine. Slavic Poland opposed the creation of a higher school here, which could become a dangerous political and cultural centre. Ukrainian youth was forced to obtain higher education in the walls of Krakow and other European universities.
