John Hopkins University is the first private research institution in America that was established in the year 1876. It has taken its name from America's first and great entrepreneur, philanthropist and abolitionist, John Hopkins. Daniel Coit Gilman was the first president of the university who aims to transform higher education in the USA by incorporating research and teaching together.
The university has been methodologically categorized into 10 divisions on the campus in Washington D.C. and Maryland with Italy, Singapore, and China as international centers. The Homewood Campus located in the Baltimore's Charles neighborhood has two undergraduate divisions including the Whiting School of Engineering and the Zanvyl Krieger School of the Arts and Sciences. In East Baltimore, there are the medical institutes of the university namely the Bloomberg School of Public Health and the nursing school. The university also comprises of various other departments and facilities including the Applied Physics Laboratory, Peabody Institute, Carey Business School and the Paul H. Niltz School of Advanced International Studies.
