The Catholic University of Freiburg (KH Freiburg) was founded in 1971 by the merger of several traditional predecessors. It is one of five Freiburg universities and one of seven Catholic universities in Germany.

The institution of the Catholic University is the Catholic University of Freiburg gGmbH. Its shareholders are the Archdiocese of Freiburg, the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart, the German Caritas Association, the Caritas Association for the Archdiocese of Freiburg and the Caritas Association of the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart.
The KH Freiburg is state recognized. The state recognition was extended in 1992 to the courses of study in the field of nursing and in 2001 to the courses of studies in the department of management. The exercise of their duties in teaching and study, research and training are carried out in independent self-government.
For the summer semester 2007, the then state government of CDU and FDP introduced a tuition fee of € 500. Irrespective of this state decision, tuition fees of the same amount were introduced at the decision of the shareholders at the Catholic University of Freiburg as well. 2011 elected green-red state government abolished the summer semester 2012, the tuition fees at state universities again. For the winter semester 2012/13, the tuition fees for the bachelor degree programs at the Catholic University of Freiburg were reduced from € 500 to € 280.
