During the celebration ceremony on August 31, 1898, the Director of Trade and Manufacturing Department had proclaimed an Order of the Russian Emperor Nicolai II on establishing of Kiev Polytechnic Institute. By Czar’s Order, the following four Colleges were established: Mechanical (109 students), Engineering (101 students), Agricultural (87 students), and Chemical (63 students).
The idea to establish a technical educational institution was generated 18 years earlier on February 18, 1880.
The Association of Sugar Mill Owners from the South West region of Russia, "in honour of the 25th anniversary of the reign of Alexander II, the Liberator," had decided to collect the necessary funds to establish a technical institution. The Sugar Mill Owners donated 1 000 374 roubles. One of them was a famous sponsor: Georgiy Ippolitovich Gnizdovsky (Gniazdowski, first from the left, bottom row).
