Founded in 1930, Ivanovo State Medical Academy is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the small city of Ivanovo (population range of 250,000-499,999 inhabitants), Ivanovo Oblast. Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Ivanovo State Medical Academy (ISMA) is a coeducational higher education institution.

Ivanovo State Medical Academy was established in 1930. The Academy is located in Ivanovo city. It is the administrative center of Ivanovo Region. The city is situated in the river basin of the Volga, on the popular tourist route "the Gold Ring of Russia ". Ivanovo is also known as "the city of brides".
By the end of 1940, Ivanovo State Medical Institute had 37 departments.
In 1984, was established the Faculty of Advanced Medical. Later on, this faculty has been converted into additional faculty and postgraduate education and then into the Institute of Postgraduate Education.
In 1991, first foreign students were accepted. Since that time, more than 200 foreign students have obtained medical education at Ivanovo State Medical Academy. Currently, foreign students from more than 23 countries are trained at the Academy. "The Days of National Culture" are regularly held by international students' communities.
In 1993, there were organized the following faculties: Nursing Faculty, Pre-University Training and Foreign Students Faculty.
