The university has repeatedly changed its official name. Orenburg State Pedagogical University is the legal successor of the Orenburg Institute of Public Education (organized by the resolution of the People's Commissariat of Education of the RSFSR of July 30, 1919, functioned in the city of Orenburg from 1919 to 1930) and the Orenburg State Pedagogical Institute (opened in 1930 by a resolution of the commission of the Council of Commissars RSFSR from 07/08/1930).
