Canada remains an important study destination, but students must now verify study-permit requirements and Post-Graduation Work Permit eligibility much more carefully before selecting a program.
2026 study permit application cap
Canada has allocated a limited number of study permit application spaces for students who require a provincial or territorial attestation letter. Admission from a college or university does not by itself guarantee that a study permit application will be accepted or approved.
PGWP language requirement
Most applicants for a Post-Graduation Work Permit must now provide acceptable language test results. The required level depends on the type of program completed, and limited exemptions apply.
Field-of-study requirement
Certain non-degree programs must be in an eligible field of study for PGWP purposes. Students should verify the exact Classification of Instructional Programs code and the rules applicable on the date of their study permit application.
DLI status alone is not enough
A school may be a Designated Learning Institution while some of its programs are not PGWP eligible. Confirm the exact institution, campus, credential and program rather than relying on a general statement that the college is a DLI.
Financial and academic planning
Students should select a program that fits their academic history or work experience and prepare genuine financial documentation. Part-time work should not be treated as the main source of tuition funding.
Key points for students
- Verify whether a PAL or TAL is required.
- Check the exact program and campus for PGWP eligibility.
- Confirm whether the field-of-study rule applies.
- Prepare for the PGWP language requirement.
- Review refund terms before paying tuition.
