Indian students planning a UK degree should now consider the date on which they expect to apply for the Graduate visa, because the permitted stay changes from January 2027.
Graduate visa duration from January 2027
The official UK government guidance states that the Graduate visa lasts two years when the application is made on or before 31 December 2026 and 18 months when the application is made on or after 1 January 2027. Doctoral graduates continue to receive three years.
Why the application date matters
A student beginning a one-year master’s program in late 2026 may finish and apply for the Graduate visa in 2027. Such a student may therefore fall under the 18-month period even though the course started earlier.
Start career planning during the course
Students should prepare a UK-style CV, build LinkedIn visibility, attend career events, apply for graduate schemes and identify employers relevant to their sector before completing the course.
Choose courses based on employability
Do not choose a program only because it is inexpensive or offers a quick admission. Review curriculum, practical projects, accreditation, location, industry links, career services and employment outcomes.
Is the UK still suitable?
The UK can remain attractive for one-year master’s programs and specialised qualifications. However, the Graduate Route should be treated as a limited job-search and career-building period, not as a guarantee of settlement.
