The United States remains a leading destination for Indian students, but F-1 visa applicants must now prepare for closer screening of their academic purpose, finances, online presence and overall consistency. A major new rule also replaces open-ended “Duration of Status” admission with a fixed period of stay from September 15, 2026.
Major new rule: Fixed stay of up to four years
- From September 15, 2026, F students will generally be admitted for a fixed period instead of “Duration of Status” or D/S.
- The initial admission period cannot exceed four years, even when the academic program may take longer.
- Students who need additional time must obtain an approved extension of stay from USCIS or leave and seek readmission, depending on the applicable procedure.
- The post-completion departure period is reduced from 60 days to 30 days.
- Students must check the expiration date on their Form I-94 and must not assume that maintaining an active I-20 automatically permits an unlimited stay.
How the new fixed-period stay affects students
Under the earlier D/S system, many F-1 students could remain in the United States while they continued to maintain valid student status. Under the new rule, the Form I-94 will carry a specific end date. Students whose studies, authorised practical training or other eligible activity require time beyond that date may need to file an extension request before their authorised stay expires.
This is especially important for PhD students, students changing programs, students requiring extra semesters and students whose OPT or STEM OPT planning may extend beyond the fixed admission date. Students should work closely with their Designated School Official and should not wait until the last moment to review extension requirements.
Online presence review is now important
The US Department of State has confirmed that F, M and J student and exchange visitor applicants are already subject to online presence review. Applicants should ensure that publicly available information, including education and employment details, does not conflict with the DS-160, résumé or university application.
What students should check before the interview
Review your LinkedIn profile, public social media accounts, academic history, employment dates, course details and university information. Do not provide false information or attempt to create a misleading profile. The safest approach is complete truthfulness and consistency.
Course relevance and university knowledge
Students should be able to explain why the selected program fits their previous education or work experience, why the university was chosen, what subjects the course includes and how the qualification supports a realistic career plan.
Financial documents must be credible
An I-20 does not guarantee visa approval. Be ready to explain tuition, living costs, education loans, savings, sponsor income and the relationship with the sponsor. Avoid unexplained last-minute deposits or documents that cannot be verified.
Interview preparation for Indian students
Prepare clear and personal answers rather than memorised scripts. Know your university location, course duration, tuition, scholarship, important subjects and expected career outcome. Your answers should match the information already submitted.
